Held by the Manawatu Philatelic Society under the Patronage of the New
Zealand Philatelic Federation and with support from the Central Districts
Philatelic Trust and the New Zealand Philatelic Trust Inc
Palmerston North, 19th March, 2011
|
The 19th March is the date
when judging results are announced and the entries are on public display at the
Manawatu Convention. Actual judging takes place during the weeks before with
entries being judged by each judge and normally with a ‘judging day’ to discuss
and finalise results. This year the books and journals were in Christchurch
when the city was struck by the disastrous earthquake of 22nd
February and by good luck they were moved on the evening before from a building
which is still not accessible. Communication between judges on the results was
by email. The original judging team was Norman
Banfield FRPSNZ (Chairman), Jeff Long FRPSNZ, Steven McLachlan and Alan Jackson
(apprentice). Because the earthquake forced cancellation of the normal ‘judging
day’, it was fortunate that Jenny Banfield, an accredited national literature
judge, could be co-opted onto the jury to provide live discussion of entries
and this proved invaluable. The organisers particularly thank the three
Christchurch judges for completing judging under extremely difficult
circumstances. The judging team thanks the Trustees of the Central Districts
Philatelic Trust for organising this exhibition. We particularly thank all
exhibitors for their entries – it is their research and willingness to make
their knowledge accessible to their fellow philatelists that makes such
exhibitions possible. Medals awarded ranged from bronze to
large gold. The Grand Award was awarded to entry #7 The Postage Stamps
of New Zealand 1855-1873: The Chalon Head Issues, and the Runner-up was
entry #21 Railway Disaster Mail. The first book takes a new look at a number
of controversial areas and the second is the first comprehensive record of the
subject. The award for the Best Periodical went to entry #39 The
Collectors Club Philatelist which continues to provide in depth articles on
a wide range of subjects with The
Changing Formulas of the GPU/UPU for Postage Due being an important
contribution on a complex subject. We considered felicitations only with
regard to works applying to New Zealand and Pacific Territories, since research
work in other fields is better rewarded in their home countries. We award them
with pleasure to entry #7 The Postage
Stamps of New Zealand 1855-1873: The Chalon Head Issues and to entry #23 New Zealand Postal Notes 1886-1986 which
was awarded a special prize for research. We also acknowledge the amount of
research in entries #25 The Maritime
Postmarks of the Danish Kingdom and entry #30 Egypt: The Rural Post Service – An Introduction. In addition to our thanks to individual
authors and journal editors for their entries, we particularly wish to
acknowledge Vaccari SRL for their continued support over a number years. Finally, the organisers would like to
thank the Manawatu Philatelic Society for donating the Grand Award, the
Palmerston North Stamp Centre (Bruce Graves owner/manager) for donating the
prize for Runner-up to the Grand Award, the Royal Philatelic Society of New
Zealand for donating the prize for the Best Periodical and Norman and Jenny
Banfield for a special prize. List
